Flannel Fabric

Flannel is a soft woven fabric that not only looks and feels good but also provides warmth. The first flannels were wool but now are commonly made of cotton and occasionally other fibers. What flannel fabrics have in common is that they are napped. Napping is a finishing process performed after the fabric is woven.

The fabric is brushed to lift fibers from the yarn of the fabric. In flannel fabric, the filling yarns (yarns that go across the fabric) are loosely twisted so that fibers from the yarn are easily raised by brushing. The raised fibers create pockets that trap air, and these air pockets are the source of the extra warmth provided by the flannel.
