Bias Tape
What is Bias Tape?
What is Bias Tape?
Bias tape is made from a strip of fabric that has been cut along the bias grain of the fabric and folded in one of two ways. There are two main types of bias tape - single fold and double fold. Both types come in a variety of widths and colors It is usually purchased pre-folded in packages.

Single fold bias tape has a single fold running along each long edge of the tape.
Double fold bias tape has the same two folds along the long edges as does single fold, but the double fold tape has an additional fold that is slightly off center, making one side a little wider than the other.
When should I use bias tape?
Bias tape is most often used to finish curved edges such as armholes and necklines. Bias tape is used on these edges because it fits smoothly around the curves without adding unnecessary bulk. Double fold bias tape is also used to finish the edges of many home dec items such as pot holders and place mats.
When do I use single fold and when do I use double fold?
The notions on the envelope back will tell you which type of tape to purchase. The instructions will tell you how to apply the tape. In general, single fold bias tape is used to finish neckline and armhole edges when the tape will be stitched in place, (RIGHT SIDES together) and then turned to the inside of the garment and stitched in place again. The tape never shows on the outside (RIGHT SIDE) of the garment. Double fold bias tape is often used to encase a raw edge. In this case, the tape will show when the garment is finished.
