Silk Georgette

Silk georgette is a sheer lightweight fabric, often made of silk or polyester. It is slightly heavier and more opaque than chiffon. The twisted crepe fibers from which silk georgette fabric is made give it a springy quality that makes it seem to move on its own. While this quality makes silk georgette fabric somewhat more difficult to sew, the results are well worth the effort.

Not Just Silk Georgette Fabric

Silk georgette fabric is just one of the fabrics we carry that are classic choices for blouses and dresses. Our site also offers silk chiffon, silk charmeuse, silk organza, silk crepe and peau de soie fabric. The common denominator among these fabrics is that, like georgette, they have a long history as generic silks but have been very successfully imitated in polyester. For reasons of both cost and ease of care, polyester has taken over from silk for both bridal gowns and prom dresses. However, designers still much prefer silk and where cost and practical concerns are not at issue, silk is still the fabric of choice.

Our site offers a variety of silk fabrics suitable for apparel and home decorator projects. We also offer a large selection of patterns, many suitable for silk fabric. You can also find books and a full line of notions to help you complete your silk project. We show weight per square yard for all our silks.
