Folkwear Patterns #152
Prince Charlie Jacket

The styling of this jacket with its distinctive "tails" make it well worth the effort to adapt it to the western look.

Eliminate the tabs from the sleeves and back, and also the purely decorative buttons from the front. The lapels could be left as is or eliminated.

Consider adding western style yokes to the front and back. These may be added on top of the partially completed jacket before the side seams are sewn. Finish the edges of the yoke with narrow bias binding of either self fabric or a contrast such as satin. Stitch in the ditch to attach the yolk.

If you make the jacket in Ultrasuede you could add self fringe as well to the yokes.

Folkwear Patterns #133
Belgian Military Jacket

One of the things that make this jacket is the styling of the back which tapers to a point. The addition of a back western yoke would compliment this detail.

Some options for fabric are poplin or denim.

Countryside Frock Coat
Folkwear Pattern #263

This traditional coat has been a versatile fashion through the ages. It was worn for casual outdoor activities in the English countryside in the 1700's, for formal or dress fashion in the 1800's, and for business wear until World War I. Today, it's the perfect choice for historic military or Western reenactment, as well as a very fresh contemporary look. Misses Sizes XS-XL. Men's Sizes S-XXL.

Jean Hardy Pattern #1010
Men's Jacket

This jacket, which is perfect for a western wedding use, is cut for the man with a regular build. If your man is slim make a trial jacket and adjust for fit, especially if you are using an expensive fabric.

For a more casual version of the jacket, add fringe or make the jacket from leather with fringed yokes.

Use piping in the seams is easier than bias bridal satin if your sewing skills or time are limited.

Jean Hardy Pattern
#990 Misses Shirt

This pattern comes with two styles of shirts, western and bib-front.

The western shirt looks sharp yet casual with complimentary yet contrasting fabrics: one for the yoke and cuffs, and one for the main body of the shirt.

The bib-front also uses contrasting fabrics, and hearkens back to Victorian times and gives the western shirt a more formal look.

Jean Hardy Pattern
#990 Misses Shirt

With a pattern for adults and another for children, these chaps can be as dressy or informal as you like by choosing either chap suede (real) or ultrasuede (man-made.) A nice touch on the pattern is using either leaving the leg smooth, using fringe, or ruffling the edges down the leg.

It never hurts to make a trial pair of chaps from denim as you'll be custom-fitting the length and other measurements beforehand instead of on the more expensive suede fabric. ALWAYS remember to try them on while on your horse! After you've made the necessary adjustments to the denim fabric pattern, use it to estimate the amount of suede fabric you'll need to buy.
