General Sewing Directions:

Sewing procedures italicized in the Sewing Directions are defined below.

Clip Curves to make seams lie flat.

Inner Curve: Make little clips, or snips, in the seam allowance. Just to, but not through, the stitching.

Outer Curve: Cut little wedge-shaped notches from the seam allowance.

Darts

To make darts, on the inside, fold along the solid line bringing the right sides together. Stitch ¼” from fold starting at the raw edge and tapering to nothing at the end.

Ladder Stitch

Using a strong thread, take a small stitch in one edge close to the seam. Pull up thread after each stitch to bring edges together, continue to alternate from edge to edge with the smallest hand-stitches possible. Knot thread securely at end of stitching.

Stitch

With right sides together, stitch   ¼” seams unless otherwise  stated. Stuffed items need strong seams. Added strength can be given by using very close stitching (approximately 24 stitches per inch) or by stitching seams twice. Finger press seams open within seam allowance before crossing with another line of stitching.

Stuff

Pull fiberfill apart and fluff it before you use it. Break apart she lumps and thick spots. This will help to create a smoother looking animal. Use pieces about the size of a tennis ball. Pack into place using the end of a long handled wooden spoon, stuffing fork or chop-stick. Stuff small amounts into pointed areas. Pack firm in place each time stuffing is added. Use both hands to mold and shape, being careful not to over stuff or make lopsided.

Trim Corners so the finished corner will form a sharp point when turned right side out. Cut off excess seam allowance at point and at each side.

Step 1: Body Front and Ear
Note: Make each half of the bear as follows

  1. Make dart in body front. Press dart toward lower edge.

  2. Pin polyester fleece to wrong side of one ear section.

Machine-baste 1/4” from raw edge. Trim fleece close to stitching.

  3. Stitch facing to ear along outer curved edge, as shown. Clip curve.

  4. Turn ear right side out. Baste raw edge.

  5. On outside, pin ear (fleece side) to body front placing ear 1/4” to 1/2” beyond dart, keeping raw edges even. Baste raw edges.

Step 2: Body Back and Seams

Note: Make each half of the bear as follows

  1. To make dart seam, on inside, bring dashed lines together. Stitch along dashed line from raw edge to point. Press dart seam open.

  2. Stitch body front to body back at side seam, matching X and dot. Clip curve and to stitching at inner corners.

Sewing Hint: Make curve clipping easier by using pinking shears.

Step 3: Arms and Legs
Note: Make each half of the bear as follows

  1. Arm: Stitch two arm sections together, leaving an opening for turning and stuffing. Clip curves.

    Turn right side out.

  2. Leg 1: Stitch two leg sections together, leaving an opening between notches for turning and stuffing and leaving straight edge open to attach sole.

Leg 2: Stitch 1/4” from straight edge, as shown. Clip to stitching along straight edge.

Leg 3: With right sides together, pin sole to straight edge of leg, placing notches at leg seams. Stitch.

    Turn right side out.

  3. Attach arms and legs to body as follows:

Pin arm to body, matching small dots.

With large button on outside of arm at small dot and small button on inside at small dot, sew through all thicknesses from button to button leaving a thread shank (ease) between arm and body when stitching. After several stitches have been made back and forth, finish by wrapping thread around thread shank between arm and body several times and secure thread ends on underside. Follow the same procedure to attach leg to body, matching large dots instead.

Attach remaining arm/leg to other half of body in same manner.

Step 4: Finishing Body

  1. Stitch the two body halves together along center seam, leaving an opening between notches for turning and stuffing, being careful not to catch in free ends of limbs.

  2. Turn body right side out. Stuff body then arms and legs through openings.

  3. Ladder stitch all openings closed.

Step 5: Eyes And Nose

  1. Using doll making needle and strong thread knot ted at one end, back-stitch at small dot on head. Sew through head, coming out at remaining small dot, as shown. Slip needle through shank of one button. Slip needle back through head and out through other small dot again. Slip needle through second button. Take a couple of stitches back and forth through small dots, pulling thread tightly to indent head.

  2. Fasten thread under one button with a few small stitches.

  3. Cut nose; glue or sew on to head.
