Making Drapery - Tailored Swags
Materials:
- Decorator fabric
- Drapery lining in
same width
- Mounting board
- Staple gun and staples
- Angle irons
- Pan-head screws or molly bolts
- Trim selvages from the outer fabric. For jabots with tapered lower edges, pin-mark 12" to 18" from corners at lower edge of fabric. Draw diagonal lines from pin marks to corners at upper edge. Cut on marked lines. Cut lining to same size, using outer fabric as a guide for cutting tapered edges.
- Pin outer fabric to the lining, right sides together. Stitch 1/2" seam around all sides, leaving 12" opening at center of upper edge for turning. Trim the corners diagonally. Press the seams open. Turn right side out. Press edges, folding in seam allowances at center opening.
- Fold tab strip in half, lengthwise; stitch 1/2" seam. Repeat for the remaining tab. Turn tabs right side out; press, with seam centered on the back side.

- Cover mounting board. Staple one tab, seam side up, to mounting board, with the raw edge centered and the pressed edge about 1/4" from one end of the board. Repeat at opposite end.

- Place the fabric right side up. Fan-fold the entire width of the panel in about 4" folds, beginning at side opposite the longest edge.

- Center folded panel on the mounting board, aligning longest edge to back edge of board; staple in place. Pull tab around to the front and adjust to desired position; turn under the raw edge of the tab and staple to board. Repeat for the remaining tab.

- Mount swag. Tug gently on lower edge of center swagged portion to achieve desired look. Adjust tabs and arrange folds in swag and jabots; separate outer fabric and lining, if desired, for a fuller swag.
