Reupholstery - Replacing Jute Webbing
You can replace webbing yourself as long as it doesn't support springs, which is common on pad- or slip-seats and on some backs, wings, and arms, where the webbing is stretched across an open frame and layered directly with the burlap, stuffing, and other materials.
To replace webbing on a seat, follow the steps below. Use the same process for vertical areas, but work from bottom to top and omit the horizontal webbing from arms or wings.
- Strip the furniture, including the old webbing.
- With cut edge extending 1" beyond the back edge, place a new strip of webbing from back to front across the frame; center the webbing on the center marks. Tack with four tacks.
- Fold the cut end of the webbing back over itself and tack again three times, between the previous tacks.
- Pull the webbing tightly across the frame with one hand and insert the webbing stretcher, teeth upward, into the webbing. Insert the stretcher just far enough from the frame so that when you press the handle down and out, the top of the stretcher pushes against the frame edge, thus increasing the tension on the webbing.
- Keeping pressure on the stretcher so the webbing is as tight as possible, tack the webbing to the front of the frame.
- Cut the webbing 1" beyond the frame, fold the cut end back over itself, and tack again three times as before.
- In the same manner place additional strips of webbing parallel to the first one, spacing them 1" to 2" apart.
- To place webbing across the seat, begin at the center as before, but weave the cut end over and under alternate strips before tacking to the far side. Then stretch the webbing and tack to the near side. Repeat to weave additional strips of webbing parallel to the first, alternating the over-under sequence.
- To test the webbing tension, tap it with the tack hammer. The head should bounce off the surface.
