Yardage Estimator: Tablecloths
Yardage Estimator for Tablecloths
The following shows you how to estimate the amount of fabric needed to make a tablecloth, along with a formula to calculate any size round table.
All measurements are based on 54" wide fabrics (running yards).
Remember, these are only estimates!
Always pre-shrink fabric and trim separately before sewing.
Choosing the Length for a Tablecloth
The drop length is the measurement from the edge of the table to the desired finished length of the tablecloth.
The most popular drop lengths are:
Floor Length - edge of the table to within 1/2" of the floor
.
Dining Length - edge of the table to 1" off the chair seat
.
Formal Length - edge of the table to a drop of 18" to 24".
Measuring a Tablecloth
To determine the measurement of a tablecloth, the dimensions of the tabletop are added to a drop length. Choose the drop length above.
Cut Length of the Tablecloth
Measure the length of the table (A), plus add twice the drop length (B), plus the hem equals the cut length of tablecloth.
A + B + B + 2X hem = cut length

Cut Width of the Tablecloth
Measure the width of the table (D), plus add twice the drop length (E), plus the hem, which equals cut width of tablecloth. Divide cut width by width of fabric.
D + E + E + 2X hem = cut width
Tip: Divide the cut width by the fabric width to get the number of fabric widths you will need to purchase. If you get a fraction, you must round up to the next whole number.

Calculate Yardage
Multiply cut length of tablecloth by number of widths, which equals the total length.
Divide yardage required by the width of the fabric.
Round Tables
Finished Diameter of a Round Tablecloth
Measure diameter of table (A), then add twice the drop length (B), which equals finished diameter.
A + B + B + 2X hem = finished diameter

Calculate Yardage
Divide the finished diameter plus hems, by fabric width. Round up to the next whole number, which equals number of widths. Multiply number of widths by diameter and divide by the width of the fabric.
